We are all surrounded with so much information that deciding what is correct and what isn’t, can get difficult. When a woman is pregnant or is trying to be, loads of information starts pouring down from every source. Be it neighbours, relatives, friends, magazines, or any online portal you go to, you will find so many people dictating you what to do.

With so many misconceptions linked with female conceiving, let us burst some myth bubbles for you:

1.    You have the best chances to conceive on the 14th day of your menstrual cycle

This is a total myth. The best time to try to conceive is three days after the cycle and all the days you are ovulating. To determine on which days you are ovulating, you can use different ways. One of them is to check your body temperature which rises when you are ovulating as compared to regular days.

Your cervical mucus will be clear and slippery during this period. You can go for many apps available online that calculate your ovulation dates based on your cycle.

2.    Women can have a baby at any age

Age is the most important factor when it comes to conceiving and sustaining the pregnancy. Usually fertility starts declining after the age of 30, and by the time you reach 35, it speeds down furthermore. By the time you are 40, there is only a 5 % chance. A woman is born with all the eggs that she can produce in her life, which over time, gradually start reducing.

3.    Weight of women doesn’t affect the process of conceiving

This is true, being on a heavier side or overweight can affect chances of getting pregnant. Women with high BMI take time to conceive and even if they do, they can face a lot of complications. Therefore, it is always advisable to keep weight in check before you start planning for a baby.

4.    Smoking should be avoided only during pregnancy

Pregnancy or not, smoking can affect the process of reproduction. Whether you are a passive smoker, active smoker or indirectly exposed to the smoke regularly, it can easily affect your conceiving process and only the severity ranges. An active smoker will face adverse effects whereas a passive smoker will face less consequences concerning fertility.

Quitting smoking for at least 1 year can reverse the effects and can prevent pre-term complications, birth defects and premature deliveries.

5.    If you are suffering from PCOS, you can conceive only through IVF

PCOS is a curable syndrome that only requires a change in lifestyle. If you are eating a healthy diet and exercising, you have better chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby. If you are suffering from PCOS for quite a long time, you should go for a good gynaecologist consultation to rule out any complications at a later stage.

6.    Sexually transmitted diseases cannot affect women’s ability to conceive

Many sexually transmitted diseases go undiagnosed since they do not bring any kind of symptoms along, like Chlamydia. STD can cause inflammatory diseases, which in turn can cause infertility and reduces chances of having a baby.

7.    If you are dealing with diabetes, then you will not be able to conceive

Being prepared helps in reducing the risk that can be caused because of diabetes. Managing your diabetes can reduce the health problems and will help in conceiving a healthy baby.
